Privacy Policy

1. About this policy

This policy explains what information Halal Food AI ("we", "us") processes when you use the Halal Food AI mobile app, listed in the App Store and on Google Play as Halal Checker: Food Scan, and when you visit this website. It also explains how long we keep that information, who processes it for us, and the choices you have.

2. This website

  • Google Analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 to count visits and to see which pages lead people to the App Store or Google Play. It records the pages you view, the page that sent you here, clicks on the store links, your approximate location (country and city, worked out from your IP address) and your device and browser type. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses. It sets two first-party cookies, _ga and _ga_ followed by an identifier, which last up to two years and tell one visit from a repeat visit. Google signals and advertising features are turned off, and the data is not used for advertising. We keep it for 14 months. Google processes it for us as a service provider and may process it outside your country, including in the United States.
  • Your choice. If you visit from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Türkiye or Brazil, Google Analytics sets no cookies unless you choose Allow. Until then, or if you refuse, it receives only cookieless signals with no identifier (for example, that a page was viewed), which Google uses to estimate visits in total. Elsewhere it is on by default and you can refuse it. Wherever you are, you can change your choice at any time with "Analytics choices" at the bottom of every page; refusing also removes the Google Analytics cookies from your browser. Your choice is saved in your browser's local storage on this device, not in a cookie.
  • Cloudflare Web Analytics. We also use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies and without identifying you.
  • No forms. This website has no contact or sign-up forms, and sets no cookies other than the Google Analytics cookies described above.
  • Hosting. The site is served through Cloudflare. Like any web server, our hosting receives technical data such as your IP address and browser type in order to deliver the page and protect it from abuse.

3. No account, an anonymous device identifier

The app has no account, sign-up or login, and we do not ask for your name, email address or phone number. To count your daily scans and to connect a subscription to your device, the app uses an anonymous identifier for your device (on iPhone the vendor identifier, on Android the Android ID, or a random value if neither is available).

4. What the app processes

4.1 Scans

  • Barcode numbers you scan or type are sent to our servers to look the product up, mainly in Open Food Facts, an open food database, and in corrections reviewed by us.
  • Ingredient text you type or paste and photos of ingredient lists are sent to our servers for analysis. Location and other metadata (EXIF) are removed from photos.
  • Artificial intelligence. To read the text in a photo, and to read and translate typed text, we send it to Google Gemini. If Gemini is unavailable or cannot process a request, another AI provider, OpenAI or Anthropic, processes it instead. These providers only read the text; the halal result is decided by our own rules.

4.2 Stored on your device

Your scan history, your favorites, the photos you took for them and your language setting are stored on your device and are not synced to our servers. History and favorites are not restored on a new phone.

4.3 Stored on our servers

  • Scan photos are kept in private storage for up to 90 days so we can check and improve the accuracy of results, then deleted, unless they are part of a report or contribution that is still under review.
  • Products you add to favorites or lists by photo or text are stored on our servers so these features work.
  • Shared lists are stored on our servers and are visible to the people you invite.
  • Reports and contributions. When you report a result or submit a missing product, we store what you send: your answers, the photos and, if you choose to give it, your email address. If a submitted product is approved, its front-of-pack photo is published in the app for all users; the photo of the ingredient list is not published.
  • Push notifications. If you turn notifications on, we store your device's push token and your notification choices.
  • Support email. If you contact us from the app, the draft email includes your app version, device model, operating system, language, plan and device identifier, so we can help you. We keep the emails you send us.

5. Purchases

Subscriptions are bought and paid for through the App Store or Google Play. We never receive your payment card details. We use RevenueCat to check your subscription status, which is linked to your device identifier.

6. Analytics, crash reports and advertising in the app

  • Analytics and crash reports. We use Firebase Analytics, Firebase Crashlytics and Sentry to understand how the app is used and to fix errors. They receive usage events, crash reports, and device and app information such as device model, operating system and app version.
  • Advertising. The free plan shows ads through Google AdMob. On iPhone, AdMob uses your device's advertising identifier only if you allow tracking when the app asks. In the European Economic Area, the app asks for your consent before personalised ads are shown. Premium has no ads.

Each of these providers processes data under its own privacy policy: Google (Gemini, Firebase, AdMob), OpenAI, Anthropic, Sentry, RevenueCat and Cloudflare.

7. Sharing and transfers

We do not sell your information. We share it only with the service providers named in this policy, so they can provide their service to us, and when the law requires it. These providers may process information outside your country.

8. Your choices and rights

  • You can delete your scan history and favorites in the app at any time.
  • You can choose not to use photo or text analysis, and scan barcodes only.
  • You can turn notifications off in the app, and turn ad tracking off in your device settings.
  • To have information stored on our servers deleted, or to ask what we hold, email us from the app's contact option so your device identifier is included.

Depending on where you live, you may have further rights, such as to object to processing or to complain to your data protection authority.

9. Children

The app and this website are not directed at children under 13. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

10. Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we update the date at the top of this page.
