Terms of Use

1. Acceptance of Terms

By downloading, installing or using the Halal Food AI mobile application ("App"), listed in the App Store and on Google Play as Halal Checker: Food Scan, you agree to these Terms of Use ("Terms"). If you do not agree, do not use the App.

2. Description of Service

The App checks food products against a fixed set of rules written for halal checks. It lets you:

  • scan a product's barcode, or type its barcode number;
  • type or paste an ingredient list;
  • photograph an ingredient list, which is read with artificial intelligence;
  • keep a scan history and favorites on your device;
  • share product lists with people you invite;
  • report a result you believe is wrong, and submit products that are missing.

Each result is Halal, Suspect, Not Halal or Unknown, with the reasons shown. Results are information to help you decide, not a halal certificate, and should not be the only basis for a dietary decision.

3. No Account

The App works without an account. No email, password or other personal details are needed. Your device is identified by an anonymous device identifier, which also holds your subscription and daily scan count. You are responsible for the security of your device.

4. Free Use, Premium and Payment

4.1 Free use

  • Free use includes a daily allowance of scans. The current allowance is shown in the App and may change. It resets daily at 00:00 UTC.
  • A barcode scan, a typed ingredient check and a photo analysis each count as one scan. A scan that fails, a barcode that is not found and an unreadable photo do not count.
  • When the allowance is used up, you may be offered extra scans for watching an optional ad.
  • The free plan shows ads, keeps your most recent scans visible in history, and limits the number of favorites, shared lists and list members, as shown in the App.

4.2 Premium subscriptions

Premium is an auto-renewing subscription, offered weekly or yearly. It removes the daily scan limit and ads, shows your full scan history, and removes the limits on shared lists. The price is shown in the App Store or Google Play for your country before you buy. If a free trial is offered, its length and the price after it are shown before you confirm.

4.3 Payment, renewal and cancellation

All purchases are processed by the Apple App Store or Google Play, and payment is charged to your store account when you confirm the purchase. A subscription renews automatically unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and the renewal is charged within the 24 hours before that period ends. You can manage or cancel a subscription in your App Store or Google Play account settings. To use your subscription on a new device, use Restore purchases in the App.

4.4 Refunds

Refunds are requested from the App Store or Google Play under their own refund policies.

5. Your Contributions

When you report a result or submit a product, you confirm that you have the right to share the photos and information you send. You give us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, review, use and display them to provide and improve the App. If a submitted product is approved, its front-of-pack photo may be shown to all users of the App. We may reject or remove any contribution.

6. Shared Lists

Anyone who has the invite link or code for a list can join it, so share invites only with people you trust. List owners can manage who has access.

7. Accuracy and Limitations

We work to give accurate results, but they are provided for information only. Their accuracy depends on:

  • the quality and completeness of product data from third-party sources such as Open Food Facts;
  • the quality and readability of photos;
  • the completeness of the ingredient information provided;
  • changes manufacturers make to recipes, which can differ between countries.

Artificial intelligence reading a photo can make mistakes. No ingredient check can establish how meat was slaughtered, which processing aids were used, or whether a product was made on shared lines. Always check the product label yourself, and when in doubt contact the manufacturer or consult a qualified religious authority. We are not responsible for consequences of relying on the App's results.

8. Intellectual Property

All content, features and functionality of the App, including text, graphics, logos, icons, images and software, are the property of Halal Food AI or its licensors and are protected by copyright, trademark and other intellectual property laws. Product data from Open Food Facts is used under its open database licence.

You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell or lease any part of the App without our prior written consent.

9. User Conduct

You agree not to:

  • use the App for any illegal or unauthorised purpose;
  • attempt to gain unauthorised access to the App or its systems;
  • interfere with or disrupt the App's operation;
  • reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the App;
  • use automated systems to access the App without permission;
  • submit false reports or contributions, or content you have no right to share.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Halal Food AI and its developers are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or revenues, whether incurred directly or indirectly, or any loss of data, use or goodwill, resulting from your use of the App.

11. Disclaimer of Warranties

The App is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that the App will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free from viruses or other harmful components.

12. Termination

We may suspend or end your access to the App at any time, with or without notice, including if you breach these Terms. When access ends, your right to use the App ends immediately. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination will survive it.

13. Changes to Terms

We may change these Terms. When we do, we update the date at the top of this page. If you keep using the App after a change, you accept the updated Terms.

14. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which the App is operated, without regard to its conflict of law rules. Nothing in these Terms limits rights you have under the consumer protection laws of your country.
